Online upto 5:30\, on the door from 7:00.\nWitness and discover two of the country’s top emerging young jazz artists – one sax\, one trumpet – with a burnin’ organ trio backing\, playing well-known swingin’ standards and more! \nBuilding on the success of previous years’ July concerts\, we will feature 2 young emerging artists – RJ Gilbert & George Hilliam – across 2 sets\, backed by the Arran Shanghavi Organ Trio. \nThe Arran Shanghavi Organ Trio: Arran Shanghavi (o\,p)\, Jamie McLeish (gtr)\, Michael MacCourt (dr) ; \nRunning order: \nSet 1: 7:30 RJ Gilbert (Alto Sax) \nInterval 8:20 \nSet 2: 8:35  George Hilliam (Trumpet)  \nFinale: aprox. 9:20-9:30 jam\, inviting RJ back on stage to join George and the Band. \nRJ Gilbert (Alto Sax) – 2024 BBC young jazz musician semi-finalist\, currently in his final year at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. His unique melodic voice\, luscious tone and highly complex bebop language has made him a very in demand player in the midlands jazz scene. This voice heavily draws inspiration from Dick Oatts\, Mike Williams and Vincent Herring. RJ recently returned from a successful tour of China with his Doug Sides band\, a band dedicated to the memory of their late mentor. Expect tasteful virtuosity and raw emotion (especially on the ballads!). \nGeorge Hilliam (Trumpet) is currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He started playing the trumpet under Jon Eno in Derby with Hot House Music which first sparked his passion for jazz. He now studies under Nick Smart\, Tom Walsh and James Copus just to name a few. At the Academy\, he has been noticed for his high-quality composing and arranging – works of which have been heard in venues around the country. The ‘big picture’ outlook one gains from good arranging and composition George brings into his playing\, creating well-crafted story-like solos which captivates any audience member! \nThe BJazz House Band – The Arran Shanghavi Organ Trio \nMichael MacCourt (Drums):  An emerging figure in the UK and Berlin jazz scene\, Michael MacCourt began his journey in big bands\, eventually holding it down for the award-winning Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra from 2022-25. He elegantly delivers this exciting big band energy – in style\, not volume – to the small group setting. This combined with his active listening makes him a top choice for many players and a very engaging watch and listen for audiences. \nMichael attended the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire receiving tutorage from the like of Mike Williams and Malcolm Garrett. He is currently reading Geography and Politics at Freie Universität Berlin on a Year Abroad from the University of Birmingham and already well involved in the scene there. He regularly attends the sessions at Zigzag and B-flat jazz clubs and has featured on recordings from students at JIB. Michael has been fortunate enough to have jazz recordings of him with BJazz’ very own Arran Shanghavi. Their work featured on the ABC network with Conan O’Brien on a trailer for the Oscars. Most notably\, Michael has also performed with Percy Pursglove and on Tom Ward Septet Album (Bouncin’ & Barkin’ with the Tom War Septet) – Tom Ward who featured himself at BJazz in a support act with Guilia Marro. Check that record out to get a taste of Michael’s exquisite brushes playing. Through connecting with a wide variety of musicians at home and abroad while playing an exciting array of genres\, Michael aims to find a unique creative space fuelled by both his big band experience and love for the modern sound. \nJamie McLeish (Guitar):  Jamie McLeish is currently in his 3rd year studying Jazz guitar at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Attributed by colleagues as having ‘the finest ear in the Midlands’\, Jamie’s rich harmonic and melodic sense has made him very stand out amongst guitarists in the midlands scene. He has been gigging in and around Birmingham for the past couple of years playing various styles of music such as funk\, R&B\, soul and jazz. He brings these other styles and experiences into his jazz playing\, and doesn’t shy away from classic tropes of these genres’ that audiences love. Jamie is also making himself known as a composer and arranger\, having recently had one of his arrangements played in his Conservatoire’s Eastside Jazz Club. His influences include the likes of John Mayer\, Mateus Asato and Pat Martino. \nArran Shanghavi (Organ): Arran Shanghavi is a freelance musician hailing from Berkhamsted but now residing in Birmingham. Recently he is being noticed for his specialization into the Hammond organ\, less common nowadays among UK jazz pianists. Consequently\, he is now is a member of the Detroitwich Funk Machine fronted by Tom Clarke-Hill (voice of Tony the Tiger) and Andy Shillingford and the Big Wolf Band (UK Blues Awards nominated band – Top 5 Best Blues Bands) first joining them on their 2025 European tour. Arran brings these funky and bluesy influences into his jazz playing\, creating that naughty hammond organ style and sound we all know and love! \nArran read Philosophy and Politics at the University of Birmingham (UoB). Despite this\, Arran integrated himself into the Conservatoire and local music scenes. He hosted a month of jam sessions at Jazz at the Spotted Dog (now Digbeth Jazz\, the parliamentary award-winning club) – the first UoB student to do so. Arran was president of the UoB student jazz society (JFS) for two years. His serious journey in jazz and music started when he received a place on the Junior Jazz programme at the Royal Academy of Music\, taught by UK jazz legend Gareth Lockrane. In 2022 Arran joined the Committee of BJazz helping with social media promotion and BJazz’s Showcasing Emerging Talent initiative\, designing and hosting the club’s 13th concert each year – a concert dedicated to the aim of exposing BJazz’s audiences to the top up-and-coming young jazz talents.

SUMMARY:Leon Greening Trio - echoes of all the greats of post-bop piano (8:00pm+ Support Act 7:10)
DESCRIPTION:Born in Southampton to a jazz-loving father\, Leon studied piano at Leeds College of Music and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, London. Inspired by the likes of Bud Powell\, Wynton Kelly and Bobby Timmons\, Leon has been a popular performer at BJazz with his hard swinging style. Tonight his Trio features the brilliant young double bassist Adam King and a familiar face to BJazz\, the drummer Matt Skelton. \n\nLeon will be playing a program of two pieces (and/or arrangements by) each of his six piano idols of jazz: Bobby Timmons\, Dudley Moore\, Cedar Walton\, Bud Powell\, Victor Feldman and Wynton Kelly. \nListen to an excellent recently recorded interview by Radio Dacorum which includes much about Leon’s background and influences with full tracks from his own release: \n\n \n“One of the most swinging bands on the jazz planet” – Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club promotion \n“Leon Greening….epitomises the assured confidence of a new generation.’” – Jazz Journal \n“Listening to Leon Greening’s playing is like hearing a history of post-Bop piano…authentic and yet personal echoes of (all the greats)…” – Clark Tracey \nLeon Greening (p)\, Mirko Scarcia (b)\, Matt Skelton (d) \nLeon Greening has played and recorded with many leading jazz artists including: Peter King\, Jim Mullen\, Spike Robinson\, Clark Tracey\, Steve Brown\, Dave Green\, Christian Brewer\, Damon Brown\, Alex Garnett\, Matt Wates\, Steve Fishwick and Nat Steele.  He has performed regularly at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club\, 606 Club\, Pizza Express Soho\, Jamboree Barcelona\, as well as many of the UK’s jazz venues and festivals. \nHis album “Cookin’ in Brooklyn” recorded at Systems Two recording studio in New York features the superb US alto saxophonist Vincent Herring and the UK’s magnificent Alex Garnett on tenor sax\, with Michael Janisch on double bass and Steve Brown on drums\, and is available on the Leopard Records label. \nHe also has his own quartet with Alex Garnett on alto saxophone\, a two saxophone quintet with Alex Garnett on tenor sax and Sam Mayne on alto sax\, a quartet with trumpeter Steve Fishwick playing the music of the legendary pianist Bobby Timmons\, and a sextet: “Celebrating Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers”. \nMirko Scarcia \nMirko Scarcia started playing bass guitar back in 1997\, with various local bands in small towns near Taranto\, Italy. He then moved to Bologna\, where he began playing double bass\, inspired by the encounter with Ares Tavolazzi (former member of the Area\, popular Italian rock-progressive band from the ’70s). Through a recommendation of Tavolazzi \, he then went on to study double bass with Maestro Luigi Giannoni at the Modena Conservatoire of Classical Music “O. Vecchi – A. Tonelli”\, where he graduated in 2009. \nAlthough always fascinated by multiple genders\, his main occupation in Bologna has been jazz music. He attended a number of jazz workshops and private lessons with John Webber\, Cecil McBee\, Curtis Landy and Ron Carter. During his years in Bologna\, he had the chance to play with various national and international artists such as Steve Grossman\, Ronnie Cuber\, Jesse Davis\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Rick Margitza\, Piero Odorici\, Barend Middlehoff\, Jimmy Villotti\, Carlo Atti\, Paolo Fresu\, Fabrizio Bosso\, Flavio Boltro\, Shawn Monteiro\, Denise King\, Giovanni Amato\, Gregory Hutchinson\, Gegè Munari\, John Webber\, Joe Farnsworth\, Willy Jones III\, Renato Chicco\, Steve Gut and many more. \nIn 2007 he won the first prize at the Moncalieri Jazz Festival\, near Turin\, Italy. \nAs well as being a musician\, Mirko Scarcia has been working as a composer and producer for years. He studied Classical and Modern Music composition with Maestros Mauro Montalbetti\, Giuseppe Calì and Antonio Giacometti. He graduated from National Conservatoire Arrigo Boito of Parma in 2018 with a thesis on Contemporary composition\, under the supervision of Maestro Roberto Sansuini. \nAgain with Maestro D’onghia he has been working as an assistant composer and producer\, on projects “Morgan e il Paese dei Balocchi” (2016) and “Arisa Summer Tour” (2018)\, both with Philharmonic Orchestra “Arturo Toscanini” of Parma\, “Eterno Tour” di Giovanni Caccamo e Beppe D’Onghia Ensemble (2018)and “Lucio Dalla – Quarant’anni dopo” (2019) with Philharmonic Orchestra of Bologna\, collaborating with some of the most important icons of Italian music\, such as Ron\, Gaetano Curreri\, Luca Carboni and Marco Masini. \nMatt Skelton is a familiar face at BJazz\, a teacher and band leader in many forms\, he has a diverse musical career over the last 3 decades\, accompanying many international jazz luminaries\, and performing on multi-continent international tours. \nTickets online upto 17:00 on the evening of the concert. DESCRIPTION:A Support Act as part of BJazz “Showcasing Emerging Talent” initiative. Early doors 6:45 then from 7:10 to 7:50pm Inception jazz quartet play. \nInception is a newly formed band of young and promising musicians from different backgrounds all introduced to each other at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. They will play Sean’s modern and modal originals alongside some of the band’s favourite music from a range of different styles of jazz. \nSean Spyros Walker – Piano\nJulien Hadwen -Alto Saxophone\nFlo Valentine – Bass\nEthan Osahn – Drums\n\n\nSean Spyros Walker lives in Berkhamsted\, from Greece\, currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in the Junior Program. He has been playing piano since he was 7. He discovered his passion in jazz just before moving to England and ever since its been his dream to play and share his music. \nEthan Osahn is a young musician studying Jazz Drums at the Purcell School of music\, and Royal Academy of music Junior Program. He has been playing drums for 11 years\, and jazz for the last 5 years\, and is hoping to continue to share his playing in Jazz clubs around London as his playing develops. \nJulien Hadwen is an energetic alto saxophone player who is studying Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music junior program and is a part of Tomorrows Warriors. He is well known for his unique Jazz fusion playing and genre bending compositions\, and is hoping to keep developing his playing and pushing his creativity forward as part of the up and coming next generation of artists. \nFlo started the double bass in 2022 studying classical for until she came to the Purcell school in 2024 where she started studying jazz with bassist Oli Hayhurst. Since then she has participated in many jazz workshops and concerts and regularly attends jazz ensembles at the Junior Royal Academy of Music and as part of Tomorrows Warriors. SUMMARY:Hertfordshire Big Band - Director Matt Ward
DESCRIPTION:The Hertfordshire Big Band is an award-winning jazz orchestra formed in 2003\, appearing regularly across the South East as well as in European tours. The band performs a hugely varied jazz repertoire\, from classics to contemporary pieces\, and is recognised as a successful semi-professional band whose key principles are to challenge themselves\, enjoy new repertoire\, and improve technically. \nGig highlights include appearances at the Watford Jazz Junction Festival\, the Kings Langley Jazz Club\, Googlies Jazz Club in Enfield\, the St Albans Maltings and Roman Open Air Theatres\, as well as at Southern Maltings Arts Centre in Ware. The band has won gold and platinum awards at the National Concert Band Festival\, in addition to holding workshops and concerts with top UK jazz professionals including Mike Lovatt and Pete Long. \nFor their performance at BJazz under the direction of MD and trumpeter Matt Ward\, they will be joined by their stellar vocalist\, Lauren Bush\, renowned Canadian-born singer and winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Alongside usual repertoire favourites by the likes of Count Basie\, Buddy Rich\, and Woody Herman\, the band will be performing some unique arrangements of works originally made famous by Miles Davis and John Coltrane\, with the year 2026 being 100 years since the birth of both jazz greats. This is a popular concert\, but some tickets will be available on the door from 7:15pm\, with priority to BJazz Members. \nOne of the UK’s most exciting guitarists\, Remi Harris leads a dynamic trio on a thrilling journey through Gypsy Jazz\, Blues\, and beyond\, with a carefully curated mix of original compositions\, jazz standards\, and exciting new arrangements of classic tunes. \nHarris is joined by double bassist Tom Moore and rhythm guitarist Chris Nesbitt\, exceptional musicians in their own right. The trio’s deep musical chemistry and effortless interplay create a mesmerizing show inspired by legendary figures such as Django Reinhardt\, Peter Green\, Wes Montgomery\, Jimi Hendrix\, and Joe Pass. Their performances blend technical brilliance with heartfelt expression\, offering an evening that is as emotionally engaging as it is musically impressive. \nRemi has dedicated himself to mastering the instrument\, taking his playing from humble beginnings busking on the streets of his local towns to performing at some of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals. SUMMARY:The Birth Of The Cool: Live - a 'Nonet' ! of star players led by Tom Harker
DESCRIPTION:Birth of the Cool: Live\nAn evening centred around Miles Davis’s album\, Birth of the Cool\, and its rich nonet instrumentation. The concert will be rooted in the historicity of the arrangements by Miles and his arranger Gil Evans\, now considered seminal\, providing attendees the chance to hear this rarely performed music originally recorded in the mid Twentieth Century. \nBirth of the Cool is a compilation album of music recorded in the formative part of Davis’ career\, which for many represents a watershed moment in post-war music and in the history of jazz. This is now known as The Birth of the Cool\, with the music that this historic nine piece group created in 1949 and 1950. The group had a number of future jazz heavyweights\, including: Gerry Mulligan\, Lee Konitz\, Max Roach\, John Lewis\, the arranger Gil Evans\, and of course band leader\, Miles Davis. \nUnlike a big band or a small jazz group\, the unconventional line up of instruments – saxophones\, trumpet\, French horn/flugel\, trombone\, tuba\, and rhythm section – is specifically selected for the warmth of their voices and the depth of timbre that they create together. This music\, celebrated in a concert at BJazz\, is truly unique\, combining bebop with classical techniques\, polyphony\, and the voices of a rich ensemble. Today these tunes sound as fresh as ever and offer a very rare opportunity to hear this music live. \nFor their performance at BJazz\, arrangements have been carefully collated for the Hertfordshire-based nonet by musical director\, Tom Harker\, with later collaborations between Miles Davis and Gil Evans also being showcased in adaptations from the albums “Porgy & Bess” and “Miles Ahead”. Go here for tickets. \nNoah Chiari: Noah Chiari is a Saxophonist currently in his final year of study at the Royal Academy of Music. Originally from Southampton\, Noah found a love of Jazz in his early teens and subsequently moved to London to study at The Purcell School for Young Musicians at 16 to further develop his skills. Despite the fact he started out as an Alto player\, he specialises in the Baritone\, having been inspired by players like Nick Brignola\, Gary Smulyan and Ronnie Cuber. Noah has performed in many highly regarded locations\, such as Pizza Express Live in Soho\, Vortex Jazz Club\, Glastonbury Festival and The Barbican with the Jules Buckley Orchestra. Alongside his performances\, he has had the privilege of collaborating with The Commonwealth Resounds organisation\, arranging and producing a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II\, which was broadcast on national radio. \nEd Wren (Pianist): Ed Wren is a jazz pianist and songwriter based in London. Drawing on influences from the straight-ahead tradition through Steely Dan to Brad Mehldau\, Ed is known for his soulful and melodic approach to improvisation\, and his creative philosophy aims at discovering a new contemporary sound through which he can channel the harmonic language of the blues. Since moving to London in 2023\, Ed has performed at Pizza Express\, The Spice of Life and The Green Note and is working actively as a jazz pianist and teacher in the city and across the wider country. \nManuel Humaran is a 21 year old guitarist who is currently in his third year at the Royal Academy Of Music in the jazz department. He was born in Wales and moved to Argentina from the age of 8 till 15. He started the Junior Jazz program at the Royal Academy of Music and participated in it for 3 years. Since his time in London he has played in various different venues across the city\, both with his band and playing in different ensembles\, and has been taught by some of the biggest names in the jazz scene. \nGeorge Balmont (Bassist): Moving to London from Southampton in 2022 to study at the Royal Academy of Music\, George Balmont is a busy electric and double bassist. Performing in a wide range of musical situations and genres\, he has appeared at festivals including Brick Lane Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Kendal Calling and has been seen alongside the likes of Ivo Neame\, Derek Nash\, Tony Kofi and Huw Warren. \nOscar Williams (Drummer): Born in Manchester\, Oscar Williams started playing drums at age 11. After his first professional gig playing a friends’ parents birthday party at age 15\, Oscar fell in love with Jazz and is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music developing his craft. He has played a variety of venues with different bands spanning from Oliver’s in Greenwich and Glastonbury to playing West Side Story in the Bridgewater Hall and Liverpool Philharmonic hall. Oscar is an active part of the London Jazz Scene and in November is playing as part of London Jazz Festival.

Festival director Chris Newstead describes Lyons as “extraordinary… a future star of European jazz”. \nHerbie Rees is a London-based electric bassist and composer\, currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. Blending influences from Allan Holdsworth\, Jaco Pastorius\, and Wayne Krantz\, his playing spans jazz\, funk\, soul\, and beyond. He has performed at leading London venues including The 606 Club and Pizza Express Holborn. \nCian Burton is a drummer and composer from the Bucks area. DESCRIPTION:6:45 doors for 7:30 start of two sets each featuring emerging professional jazz artists and students\, with 20min interval. \nSet 1: “A Tribute to Chet and Gerry”:  \nGeorge Hilliam (trumpet)\, Noah Chiari (sax)\, George Balmont (bass)\, Oscar Williams (drums)\nAfter leaving New York in late 1951\, Baritone Saxophonist Gerry Mulligan headed to California and would go on to form an iconic chordless quartet that firmly put him on the map. Although there weren’t a great deal of albums produced of the quartet’s work\, Noah Chiari and George Hilliam have transcribed many of the tracks from various recordings to recreate what it would have been like to see the band live at their regular stomping ground\, ‘The Haig Club’. As well as this\, the band will take you through some of the history and context of the group and its music to put a spotlight on these musical innovators. \nSet 2: Nat²: \nNathaniel Evans (saxes)\, Nat Littlechild (d.bass)\, Michael MacCourt (drums)\nNat Evans joins Nat Littlechild and Michael MacCourt to form Nat²\, an infectiously exciting trio bursting onto the UK jazz scene!\nThe group focuses on impulsive improvisation within their performances. Encapsulating the progressive styles of the Birmingham and London Jazz scenes\, the three of them are accoladed for their musically intimacy and ability for deep exploration within every performance. In early 2025\, the trio produced their debut album Squared to high praise.\n\nThey were equally praised for their corresponding tour\, reimagining the album to audiences across the UK. Currently\, the trio are developing their second album in preparation for an international tour in 2026.\nAt the end of Set 2 we look forward to all the players joining together in a jam. \nHosted by Arran Shanghavi\, BJazz Committee Member and professional jazz pianist. \nBios of the players: \nNat Littlechild (b) is a music scholar at the University of Birmingham who has studied under Simon Woolf\, Nick Jurd and Mark Hodgson. The tutelage of these three UK greats has given him a unique insight into the instrument using a modern sensibility to try and understand the role of the bass in jazz. During the last few years he has played with Percy Pursglove\, Soweto Kinch and Mark Lockett. He looks up to modern bassists like Tyrone Allen II and Larry Grenadier whilst admiring the work of the greats\, specifically\, Paul Chambers and Scott Lafaro. These insights and his studies have created a clear and boisterous presence from his personality and playing on the bandstand. \nNat Evans (s): As a performer and a writer\, Nat is known for his unique ability to draw the listener into the music. His style is likened to that of Immanuel Wilkins’ flexibility\, joined with a deep language coming from the jazz of Parker\, Adderley\, and Coltrane. He’s currently celebrating the release of Squared\, his latest Nat² album. \nAs a recent graduate from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire\, he is taking the UK jazz scene by storm\, having performed at prestigious jazz festivals including Cheltenham\, London\, and Birmingham. He has also performed internationally at the LAVA Jazz Festival (Portugal)\, the Velo Swing Festival (Germany)\, as well as a bespoke performance at the Eastman School of Music (New York). \nMichael MacCourt (dr) An emerging voice on the Birmingham jazz scene\, Michael MacCourt is a long-standing member of the award-winning Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra. After studying at the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire\, he has gone on to read Geography at the University of Birmingham\, recently completing his second year. \nImmersing himself in the city’s vibrant musical landscape\, Michael collaborates with a diverse range of musicians and explores a broad spectrum of genres\, from ABBA shows and incidental recordings to performing with Percy Pursglove of the NDR Big Band and recording with Tom Ward’s Septet for his debut album slated for release in August. Drawing on his extensive big band background\, he is intent on pushing the boundaries of jazz\, carving out a distinct creative space that defies convention and reflects his evolving artistic vision. \nhttps://www.natevansmusic.co.uk/squared \nNoah Chiari (s) Currently in his second year of study at the Royal Academy of Music\, Noah is from Southampton where he found a love of Jazz in his early teens and subsequently moved to London to study at The Purcell School for Young Musicians at 16 to further develop his skills. Despite the fact he started out as an Alto player\, he specialises in the Baritone\, having been inspired by players like Nick Brignola\, Gary Smulyan and Ronnie Cuber. Noah has performed in many highly regarded locations\, such as Pizza Express Live in Soho\, Vortex Jazz Club\, Glastonbury Festival and The Barbican with the Jules Buckley Orchestra. Alongside his performances\, he has had the privilege of collaborating with The Commonwealth Resounds organisation\, arranging and producing a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II\, which was broadcast on national radio. \nGeorge Hilliam (trumpet): was born in Leicestershire and first learned the trumpet with Jon Eno as a pupil at Derby Grammar School. His love of jazz developed playing with the Hot House Big Band\, GCHQ (the George Christopher Hilliam Quartet) and the National Youth Jazz Collective. In 2023 he started to study on the jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music where his teachers include Nick Smart and Tom Walsh. \nGeorge Balmont (b) Moving to London from Southampton in 2022 to study at the Royal Academy of Music\, George Balmont is a busy electric and double bassist. Performing in a wide range of musical situations and genres\, he has appeared at festivals including Brick Lane Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Kendal Calling and has been seen alongside the likes of Ivo Neame\, Derek Nash\, Tony Kofi and Huw Warren.\n“A tight band sound in which George Balmont’s imaginative precision was notably prominent” – Jazzwise \nOscar Williams (d) Born in Manchester\, Oscar started playing drums at age 11. After his first professional gig playing a friends’ parents birthday party at age 15\, Oscar fell in love with Jazz and is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music developing his craft. He has played a variety of venues with different bands spanning from Oliver’s in Greenwich and Glastonbury to playing West Side Story in the Bridgewater Hall and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Oscar is an active part of the London Jazz Scene and in November is playing as part of London Jazz Festival. \n

Inspired by the swing era and the composers of this time\, Giulia’s original music has reflections of Barney Bigard and Jimmy Giuffre. \n\nGiulia has led bands across the UK in popular jazz venues and captivates audiences with her warm\, vibrato filled clarinet playing\, inspired by clarinet greats Barney Bigard and Artie Shaw. Giulia is also a vocalist and takes inspiration from the likes of Anita O’Day\, Carmen McRae and many more. \nAs well as being an accomplished band leader\, Giulia has also performed as a sideman alongside Pete Horsfall and Xhosa Cole.\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTom Ward is a virtuosic piano player making waves on the UK jazz scene.  \nInspired by piano hero’s\, Art Tatum\, Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson\, Tom’s stride playing is rooted within the piano tradition whilst remaining fresh.  \nTom has performed all over the UK as a side man alongside Pete Horsfall and Giacomo Smith as well as leading his own bands.  \nBoth Tom and Giulia are finishing their studies at the prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and will release an album with fellow band members\, Ben Love and Honey Boulton.

A composer and pianist\, including music for many tv programmes. As a composer\, in 2017 he provided the soundtrack for the six-part documentary series Wartime Crime for Discovery/UKTV and the Tom Odell-directed How the Beatles Changed The World for Netflix\, also appearing in the latter film as a talking head. Recent soundtracks include The Rise of the Superheroes (2018)\, Charles Manson: Music from an Unsound Mind (2019) and Days Of Rage: The Rolling Stones’ Road To Altamont (2019). He has also written and recorded 27 soundtracks for Chrome Dreams’ rock documentary DVD series 2006-2015\, many currently viewable on Amazon Prime. \nHe formed his jazz quartet in 2013 and has led over 160 performances of his Hoagy Carmichael\, Dudley Moore and Stan Getz repertoire projects all over the UK. They got together to play some Jelly Roll Morton tunes and began a weekly residency at an east London cocktail bar\, working on a repertoire of obscure 1920s tunes. \nAfter a year or so\, the duo expanded with the addition of the unstoppable pulse of London’s finest rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie and bassist Harry Evans \, who added a new dimension and depth to the band\, which quickly became popular both at clubs and swing dances in London.

DESCRIPTION:Early Doors 6:45: BJazz’s initiative to Showcase Emerging Talent tonight presents both the NSL Fusion Trio at 7:10-7:50 then at 8:00 pm has a brilliant jazz Band from a renowned local music school\, with guest star Derek Nash on sax. Expect a high energy mixture of well-known jazz standards\, as well as Derek Nash’s own compositions\, in a huge variety of styles. The band will be led by Martin Shaw to a programme produced by Simon Allen\, both luminaries of Jazz in Britain. \nMartin Shaw:  Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz trumpet players in Europe. A well established and hugely respected studio and touring musician\, his powerful yet wonderfully fluent playing has been heard with the likes of Sting\, Jamiroquai\, The Brand New Heavies\, Natalie Cole\, the BBC Big Band\, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine\, Stan Tracey\, Kenny Wheeler and Guy Barker.\n\n\n\nDerek Nash: British Jazz Award-winning Derek Nash – bandleader\, composer\, arranger\, record producer and engineer – is one of the UK’s busiest jazz musicians. He is leader of six bands\, each with its own unique sound and featuring some of the top jazz musicians in the UK today. Derek has been a full-time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra since 2004 and is also a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion\, sharing the stage with many great artists including Tom Jones\, Eric Clapton\, David Sanborn\, Jack Bruce\, Amy Winehouse\, Michael Buble and Sir Paul McCartney.\n\n\nThe Purcell School for Young Musicians is a boarding and day school for young musicians 10-18yrs in Bushey and is Britain’s oldest music school. It provides a rounded education with music at its heart to approximately 190 talented young players\, singers and composers. \nEntry is based upon musical ability and potential\, not upon background or ability to pay\, thanks to the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme and the School’s own Bursaries. DESCRIPTION:7:10-7:50: As part of the BJazz initiative to Showcase Emerging Talent we have our second Support Act slot of the Season: \nLouis Richardson on bass\, Sam Justynski on drums and Natty Purbrick on keyboards \nLouis is studying at Guildhall\, Sam and Natty are at Purcell in their final year\, but do play often at RAM and Guildhall.  Their first gig was at Oliver’s Jazz Bar in Greenwich performing the works of Avishai Cohen.  They have since gone on to perform at various venues such as Watford Palace theatre with Natalie Williams\, the ‘We Are Out Here’ Festival\, Hackney Carnival and Pizza Express in Soho.  The main aim of the band is to create their own sound assimilating all the influences across the history of jazz.  Having bonded through studying music together at The Purcell School for Young Musicians they want to continue to develop their own sound.  They each bring their own experiences from classical to commercial music and hope to continue to leave an indelible mark with their own blend of talent and pure enjoyment. \nDoors and bar 6:45\, main act 8:00-10:30 as normal: The Purcell School Big Band led by Martin Shaw and featuring guest Derek Nash. \nThere are no tickets for this Support Act – tickets are for the whole event and can be purchased here.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Fowler is taking the place of Scott Hamilton as the lead for our Jan 11th concert as Scott isn’t able to travel for health reasons. Robert is one of British jazz’s greatest tenor-saxophonists. Securely rooted in the classic traditions of Coleman Hawkins\, Lester Young\, Chu Berry and their peers. He teams up with Scott’s all-star band of John Pearce on piano\, Dave Green bass and Steve Brown drums for all Scott’s bookings including the residency at Pizza Express. \nRobert’s jazz career started whilst studying graphic design in Bristol. He has since performed and recorded with artists like Rufus Wainwright\, Bryan Ferry\, the Humphrey Lyttelton Band\, a long stint with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra\, The Echoes of Ellington\, the BBC Big Band\, his own Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band\, the Pizza Express All-Stars\, Alan Barne’s Octet and Karen Sharp as well as plenty of film sessions. \nScott looks forward to full recovery and a return to travel from his Italian base during 2025.

DESCRIPTION:The first 24/5 event in the BJazz initiative “Showcasing Emerging Talent” we have early doors 6:45 then from 7:10 to 7:50pm the Noah Chiari Quartet  look forward to playing you a range of jazz\, from classic standards to some of their own compositions. The band are hard working young musicians\, some still studying at the Royal Academy\, playing jazz in a variety of line-ups across mainstream venues in the UK: \nNoah Chiari sax & lead\, Ed Wren piano\, Oscar Williams drums\, George Balmont bass. \nTICKETS: tickets cover the main concert\, Marianne Winham’s ‘Horace Silver Project’ which starts at 8:00pm. Go here for tickets. \nNoah Chiari: Noah Chiari is a Saxophonist currently in his second year of study at the Royal Academy of Music. Originally from Southampton\, Noah found a love of Jazz in his early teens and subsequently moved to London to study at The Purcell School for Young Musicians at 16 to further develop his skills. Despite the fact he started out as an Alto player\, he specialises in the Baritone\, having been inspired by players like Nick Brignola\, Gary Smulyan and Ronnie Cuber. Noah has performed in many highly regarded locations\, such as Pizza Express Live in Soho\, Vortex Jazz Club\, Glastonbury Festival and The Barbican with the Jules Buckley Orchestra. Alongside his performances\, he has had the privilege of collaborating with The Commonwealth Resounds organisation\, arranging and producing a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II\, which was broadcast on national radio. \nEd Wren (Pianist): Ed Wren is a jazz pianist and songwriter based in London. Drawing on influences from the straight-ahead tradition through Steely Dan to Brad Mehldau\, Ed is known for his soulful and melodic approach to improvisation\, and his creative philosophy aims at discovering a new contemporary sound through which he can channel the harmonic language of the blues. Since moving to London in 2023\, Ed has performed at Pizza Express\, The Spice of Life and The Green Note and is working actively as a jazz pianist and teacher in the city and across the wider country. \nOscar Williams (Drummer): Born in Manchester\, Oscar Williams started playing drums at age 11. After his first professional gig playing a friends’ parents birthday party at age 15\, Oscar fell in love with Jazz and is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music developing his craft. He has played a variety of venues with different bands spanning from Oliver’s in Greenwich and Glastonbury to playing West Side Story in the Bridgewater Hall and Liverpool Philharmonic hall. Oscar is an active part of the London Jazz Scene and in November is playing as part of London Jazz Festival. \nGeorge Balmont (Bassist): Moving to London from Southampton in 2022 to study at the Royal Academy of Music\, George Balmont is a busy electric and double bassist. Performing in a wide range of musical situations and genres\, he has appeared at festivals including Brick Lane Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Kendal Calling and has been seen alongside the likes of Ivo Neame\, Derek Nash\, Tony Kofi and Huw Warren.

SUMMARY:Quintet-a-tete: Terry/Brookmeyer hard-swinging '60s jazz
DESCRIPTION:A brilliant line-up brings us the joyous music of the Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer Quintet back in the 1960s – swinging\, expressive reworkings and orginals.\nJames Davison (trumpet)\, Callum Au (trombone)\, Sam Watts (piano)\, Jeremy Brown (bass)\, Matt Skelton (drums)\nLed by two highly regarded young jazz musicians\, trumpeter James Davison and trombonist Callum Au\, the band is inspired by the much revered US outfit from the 1960’s\, the Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer Quintet. They split their programme about equally between Terry/Brookmeyer material and compositions by Callum and Jim themselves. The emphasis is on fun\, swinging\, music bringing the atmosphere and vibe of 50’s and 60’s jazz to life for the modern day. \nTrumpeter James Davison\, an MA graduate of the Royal Acadamey of Music\, winner of the Worshipful Company of Musicians Young Jazz Musician of the year (2018) and the Smith-Watkins Trumpet Award (2016)\, pursues a busy and varied freelance career based in London. He was lead trumpet with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and work includes supporting the likes of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Concert Orchestra\, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra\, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra and Pete Long’s ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’ band\, as well as his own bands. \nCallum Au\, who is in demand as an arranger as well as for his considerable skills as a trombonist\, has built a stellar reputation on both fronts\, performing with artists such as Joss Stone\, Seth MacFarlane\, Liane Carroll\, Tim Minchin and Peter Erskine\, and writing arrangements for the likes of the BBC Big Band\, Jamie Cullum\, Clare Teal\, and the Swingle Singers as well as his own eponymously named Big Band. \nSam Watts\, pianist\, last appeared at BJazz in 2022 (Dime Notes). Living in London\, Sam has performed and recorded with many great artists\, including Jean Toussaint\, Jason Miles\, Jason Marsalis\, Ray Warleigh\, Abram Wilson and Judi Jackson. His own debut album Mime Music was released in 2017. \nMisha Mullov-Abbado featured in our 23/4 Season (Higgins/Luft Band). He is an award-winning\, London-based jazz bass player\, composer and arranger Misha Mullov-Abbado\, a BBC New Generation Artist and with three critically acclaimed albums on Edition Records under his name. \nMatt Skelton is a familiar face at BJazz\, a teacher and band leader in many forms\, he has a diverse musical career over the last 3 decades\, accompanying many international jazz luminaries\, and performing on multi-continent international tours.

SUMMARY:Lenore Raphael Trio - renowned US Jazz pianist on tour
DESCRIPTION:Lenore is an internationally renowned jazz Pianist\, Steinway artist\, radio host and jazz teacher and has been critically acclaimed as one of the best pianists in the jazz mainstream today. Critics\, jazz hosts and jazz lovers all agree that Lenore is one of the most SWINGING mainstream pianists today. Influenced by Oscar Peterson\, Bud Powell and Bill Evans\, she has taken these influences and created her own recognizable sound. \nHere she is joined by regular collaborator Paul Morgan on bass and Matt Home on drums. \nLenore has toured in England and Europe and Israel. In 2016 she did a major tour in South Africa and is always invited to return to venues where she performs. \nShe has won ASCAP awards for her original compositions\, which appear on her own CDs and other artists’. They have been played on jazz stations worldwide\, including their inclusion into the Jazz At Lincoln Center jazz stream. \nLenore has recorded 10 critically acclaimed CDS on the Swingin’ Fox Music label. Some of her recordings have reached Top 10 airplay and her 2006 recording “Invitation” and 2012 recording “Loverly” were up for Grammy nominations. \nLenore has her own radio show called “Lenore Raphael’s JazzSpot” on purejazzradio and other stations on the internet where she interviews and performs with famed jazz artists and up and coming ones as well. Along the way she has performed and recorded with such greats as Clark Terry\, Warren Vache\, Howard Alden\, Harry Allen\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, Jack Wilkins and more.  In addition\, she is a talented jazz teacher and has done highly acclaimed Jazz Master Classes and colleges and universities world-wide.
